Practical Tips for Keeping Your CME Record Accurate

Credit claims are easiest to settle while the details are fresh, so it helps to build a simple routine for each conference day rather than reconstructing everything once you are home. A few habits make a noticeable difference.

During each session

  • Note the exact session title and time. Many programs run parallel tracks with similar names, and a precise record avoids confusion when you claim credit. Cross-check against the conference program as you go.
  • Record actual time attended. CME credit is generally claimed in proportion to participation, so if you arrive late or leave early, log only the time you were present.
  • Keep handouts or slide references. They are useful if your licensing board or employer later asks for evidence of content covered.

At the end of each day

Set aside ten minutes to complete outstanding evaluations and update your personal log. Evaluations are often a condition of credit being released, and they tend to be forgotten once travel and networking take over. A short daily review also lets you spot gaps, such as a workshop you attended but did not sign in for, while staff are still on site to help.

After the conference

Download or save any certificate you receive and store it alongside your own notes. Requirements differ between countries, specialties and licensing bodies, so check with your own board or professional association about which credit types they accept, how many hours you need per cycle and how long records must be kept. If a session was accredited under a particular framework, keep that information with the certificate, since some regulators ask for it specifically.

If anything on your certificate looks incorrect, raise it promptly. Corrections are far simpler soon after the event than months later. For general questions before or after the conference, the contact page is the best starting point, and details about what is included in each attendance option are covered under registration.
