Looking back at a performing arts season like Lied's 2023-24

The Lied Center for Performing Arts sits on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus and serves as one of the region's main stages for touring productions. Its 2023-24 season has now passed, but the mix it was known for is still a useful model of how a modern performing arts centre builds a year of programming. There were tribute and revue acts drawing on well-known music, orchestral screenings of films, touring Broadway productions, big band and jazz performances, and dance companies alongside family-friendly shows.

Why film concerts and Broadway tours anchor a season

Film concerts, where a live orchestra performs the score while the movie plays on a large screen, have become a reliable draw for venues of this size. They bring in audiences who might not attend a traditional symphony programme, and they give local and touring musicians demanding, high-profile work. Touring Broadway productions do something similar for theatre. They let audiences far from New York see large-scale musicals, often over several performances in one week.

Legacy acts and jazz

Ensembles that carry on the sound of swing-era bandleaders, along with established jazz artists, attract a loyal audience. Pairing them with high-energy revue shows helps a season appeal to several generations at once. This balance between nostalgia and new work is something programmers at many venues aim for.

Lessons for conference and event planners

For anyone organising a professional gathering, such as the events covered on our program page, a performing arts season offers practical lessons:

  • Open strong. A recognisable headline act sets the tone, much as a keynote does.
  • Vary the format. Mixing lectures, panels and hands-on sessions keeps attendance steady, in the same way a season mixes concerts, theatre and dance.
  • Think about access. Venues on university campuses usually publish parking and transit guidance. Event hosts should do the same, as we try to on our venue notes.

If you plan to attend a current season at any performing arts centre, check the venue's official website for confirmed dates, ticketing and accessibility information. Popular touring shows often sell out well in advance.
